Cornwall is currently divided into 5 Parliamentary constituencies each with its own MP. Because Cornwall's population has grown over the past 20 years, it is now entitled to elect 6 MPs. The Boundaries Commission has, after extensive consultation, redrawn the boundaries of the new constituencies. These changes will take effect at the next general election.

In the middle of Cornwall, Truro & St Austell constituency will roughly split in half, separating Truro from St Austell. Falmouth Camborne constituency will lose Falmouth which will join with Truro to form the new Truro and Falmouth constituency. North Cornwall will lose Newquay, St Columb and Indian Queens/Fraddon. South East Cornwall will lose St Blazey, Fowey and Tywardreath. These areas will join with St Austell to form the new St Austell and Newquay constituency.

The Liberal Democrats in St Austell and Newquay met in Newquay on 28 November 2006 and formally resolved to establish the new local party to take effect from 1 January 2007.

Meanwhile, the existing MPs will continue to represent their constituents in the usual manner until the next general election. For example, Matthew Taylor will continue to represent all the residents in the Truro and St Austell areas; Colin Breed will continue to represent residents in St Blazey, Fowey etc.; Dan Rogerson will continue to represent all in the Newquay area.
