Steve Gilbert is opposing an application for a "Dial A Drink" service in Newquay

An application for a 24-hour 'home delivery' alcohol service in Newquay is the last thing the town needs and is a chance for local authorities to show their resolve in combating the problem of alcohol fuelled anti-social behaviour in the town, according to Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate Steve Gilbert.

The application for a home-delivery service, to be called Dial-a-Drink, has been posted outside 16 Island Crescent and is for a new 24-hour off-license.

Dial-a-Drink, which operates in other parts of the UK, takes alcohol orders by phone and delivers them direct to people's homes and similar types of businesses have been associated with selling alcohol to under-age people in other parts of the country.

Steve Gilbert said: "An after-hours service that will deliver alcohol direct to homes, hotels and campsites across Newquay at any time of the day is the last thing the town needs. I've written to Cornwall Council opposing the application but this is the first test of whether the Town Council and Police will match their recent words with actions.

"People who live in Newquay have made their views very clear over recent months - this application is an opportunity for the powers that be to show they have listened. The application must be rejected."
