TRANSPORT KEY CONCERN OF YOUNGER PEOPLE3.07.15pm GMT Tue 25th Mar 2008
"Something to do, somewhere to go and a way of getting there" was the call from mid-Cornwall's Member of the Youth Parliament, David Callaghan, when he met Stephen Gilbert, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for St Austell & Newquay, to discuss issues affecting young people. David Callaghan, who is 16, was elected in February as one of the three Members of the Youth Parliament in Cornwall. His job is to represent the voice of 11 to 19 year olds living in Mid Cornwall which includes the St Austell & Newquay area and take this voice to the decision makers and the Government. David Callaghan MYP said: "The main problems faced by younger people in Cornwall are issues around transport and youth facilities; more needs to be done to make it easier for younger people to get around." Stephen Gilbert said: "When I was growing up in Cornwall I found transport difficult, often relying on my parents for a lift, and it is disappointing that younger people still face the same problems. I will be raising the issue with Cornwall County Council. It would be good to see a concessionary fare scheme for younger people to make it easier for them to access services."
